Bali
Bali: A Slow Travel Guide
Choose a Destination: Bali, Indonesia
They call it the land of the gods, we call it the land of smiles. Bali has the most kind-hearted people. Most are hindu and they believe in karma so they are very positive and selfless. Bali is a tropical paradise. It’s been a really special place to our family for the last 17 years.
Healthy Bites
There’s so much fresh food in Bali, especially fruit; mango, jac fruit, tropical fruits are abundant. On this trip we did a cooking class with the kids making a traditional food called nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice with chicken satay) Bali is home to many rice fields, so they make lots of foods with rice, including sweets.
Connect With Nature
One way we connect with nature while in Bali is surfing. It’s our family's passion. We also went hiking through rice fields in Ubud. From the beaches to the mountains, we love to spend our time connecting with the land and the water in Bali.
Rest + Reset
We love to stay at Uluwatu Surf Villas on the cliffs of Uluwatu. With morning yoga and healthy food at the restaurant it’s the perfect place to rest and reset.
We also stayed at Bambu Indah in Ubud. It's a stunning retreat in the forest made of bamboo and teak wood.
Explore Off the Beaten Path
Eco Village in Ubud is a quaint village made up of natural, sustainable homes. They’re trying to nurture education in sustainability in Indonesia.
Utilize Sustainable Transportation
The way we like to get around as a family of four in Bali is by motorbikes.
Allow for Spontaneity
We love to see live music and dance! There is such a fun music scene there. They have live music at the beach clubs and incredible DJs from all over. It’s a very multicultural scene. This last trip, my friend Jes decided to spontaneously fly over from Australia to meet in Bali!
Disconnect and be present
The Balinese remind you of this with their full moon ceremonies and the way they create offerings to the gods - they make beautiful offerings - It’s a great reminder and also a great place to do healing work with yogis and other natural healers.
